Crystin Byrd: News

A Rare Byrd Sighting at Alberta Street on Easter Night - April 8, 2007

These Byrds have been nesting. But our best friend and beautiful
songstress, Alison Wesley, asked us to join her for an intimate show
this next SUNDAY, APRIL 8th, at an excellent acoustic music venue. It
is a rare byrd sighting!!

Coming out of our shells for Easter evening will be:

8 pm - Crystin Byrd Band - full acoustic band with cello, flute,
guitar, drums, and guest accordion by Todd Bayles. I love playing
music with these people, and it is all too rare these days while I
tend to little Lyric.

9 pm - Ali Wesley and Jay Mallison - The Willamette Weekly has called
Ali's voice heavenly; her songs are some of my personal all-time
favorite on this planet.

10 pm - Jaime and Becky - You will adore their sweet harmonies and a
breath of innocence will refresh you.

Wasssup? - January 14, 2006

Hello all my favorite people!

Wanted to let you know about a few things:

1) I am HUUUUUGE. But I have a reason...I am now 6 months pregnant and
continuously amazed by the kicking in my belly, which in the last week has become
visible, not just palpable.

2) You won't be able to see the kicking, I don't think, while I am behind my guitar
at this upcoming show (...if I can still hold my guitar, that is : ) This is a
fantastic line-up of talent that we're calling: Music, Poetry and Pizazz:
Spiderwise Press Release Concert and Attack of the Muses!

"First off, she can honestly sing like Joni Mitchell, no lie. With a swirl of
acoustic strumming to back her, Tucker lets her most important instrument shine,
that rich, sophisticated soprano voice of hers...."

Okay, so there you have it! Attack of the Muses!

3) Shows will be fewer and further between for me, most likely, as my due date
approacheth and my energy turns to preparing for this little person to enter our
lives. So come see us now! The 4-piece has been brewing up new songs and delving
more deeply into discovering each other's talents, tastes, and expression. It has
been awesome for me to get to know Jess, Brian, and Scott better all the time. What
a talented and self-deprecating bunch : )

4) There are a handful of new pics on the website
http://www.crystinbyrd.com/photos.html and you can now download "I Love...", the
song from Rolla Selbak's movie, "Making Maya," for free at

Saved by "Twelfth Fret" - November 12, 2005

The day before we were to leave for our show at the coast, I pulled my guitar out of the case for rehearsal, only to find that in transit, the bridge of my Dean Exotica guitar had pulled half-off! Splintering wood is not what one wants to see on the day before an important gig! The guys at "Twelfth Fret" were there for me - sensitive to the fact that I had to get her up and running and leave for the gigs at the coast - they reassured me that this was not an unusual occurence (especially on Dean Exoticas, sadly. To quote Pierce: "Sure are pretty guitars," leaving the rest unspoken, I think : ) Anyways, they had her fixed by the next day and we went on our merry way. Thanks, guys.

The aptly-named, "Stormy Weather Festival" - November 10, 2005

Hello Everyone,
The band spent an exciting stormy weather weekend (wind! hail! trees coming down! power outages! and great music!) performing and listening to some pretty stellar music at the "Stormy Weather Arts Festival" this last weekend in galleries and cafes throughout Cannon Beach, Oregon. One of my favorite places of all time, (besides Le Mont St. Michel in France, of course), Cannon Beach is also where the debut CD photo shoot took place, oh so long ago; so it was pretty cool to revisit and remember the good, the weird, and the beautiful of that time.

In one week, the full Byrd Band, with our line-up of cello, flute, sophisticato drummery, and lil ol me, will be onstage at The Mississippi Pub, opening the night for some pop/folksy/bluesy out-of-towners:

Thursday, November 17th, 2005 -- 9pm
THE MISSISSIPPI PIZZA PUB
Pop, Folk, & Blues Night
3552 N Mississippi Ave.
Portland OR 97211

order of appearance:
Crystin Byrd Band - http://www.crystinbyrd.com
Anna Laube - http://www.annalaube.com
and
Leopold and His Fiction - http://www.leopoldandhisfiction.com

About $3 but no one turned away for lack of funds, or just to check us out!
Come say hi, have some pizza, spinach salad, listen, chat....We'd love to see you!
xoxo,
Crystin

New Website Launch - August 31, 2005

We're launching a new website that will be easier to navigate and easier to keep updated!

July 21, 2005

I just returned from a brief but incredibly excellent few days in NY City, where I and 9 other honored participants attended October Project's weekend workshop in Soho. It was a meaningful and expansive experience for me, and I'm so glad timing and lucky things allowed me to go. There were so many amazing moments, that I would have a difficult time synthesizing the whole thing...but perhaps the private concert in Marina Belica's loft, without microphones, without distance, was the most incredible. Marina's voice is so pure, so strong; Julie, also the lyricist, harmonized with her, and they would exchange loving looks throughout certain songs, communicating volumes, as though helping each other through the feelings that must come up while singing such songs with such grace. This was especially important for me to see, as if by their actions, I am given permission. Emil Adler backed them on electric piano, telling us definitively, "can't get in the way of the voices," when someone questioned his respectfully low volume. Wow, now there's a concept! Someone confident in their talent, and confident in their role. In heart-soaring moments, Emil would also join in vocal 3-part harmony with Marina and Julie...is it possible to lift and break the heart in the same moment? Yep.

Playing track 9, "Sing To Me," from my album, for one of my all-time favorite bands, was...well...as if my life had made a full circuit. I could kind of only smile and say, "ohhhh," when Julie hugged me afterwards and told me, "I am such a fan." I try not to be a star-struck girl, but...that was a moment I will never forget.

I special shout out to Michael Jonas a fellow attendee, and photographer, who took a few lovely pictures of me on the streets of the city. I will try to post those soon. And also to the others there - Dave and Irene, Beth and Ron, Charlie, Debbie, Judy. And to Emil Adler, Julie Flanders, and Marina Belica for sharing their gifts and their home with us. A fabulous group of people, and an amazing once-in-a-lifetime event.

Hey, sweeet. "My Silence" is receiving some digital distribution. Just got word that Apple iTunes and iTunes-Europe have been selling some tracks from the CD! The most popular track so far? "Shadow," the first track on the album.

A wee little story about "Shadow"....All hyped up but all by himself at the home studio, with no one to hear the incredible arrangement for "Shadow" that he'd just completed after many many hours of total focus, Todd opened his third story windows and...wept. So did I when I heard it. There's a little insider's story for you : ) Now you know...we weep over our own music. : )

Portland has a great bunch of musicians and music-enthusiasts who have come-together to put-together a very cool event, PDX Pop Now, bringing to you music you may have heard by bands you may know, along with music you probably have not heard by bands you probably don't know. I think it's a great thing. Crystin Byrd Band was nominated to play at the festival this year...you can vote for us or whomever you think is worthy of such an honor - Voting ends June 30th - click on this link!

Here's more, in their own words:::::::
Our Mission

Featuring more than forty bands chosen by local musicians and fans, the second annual PDX Pop Now! festival will showcase the astonishing breath and depth of Portland's local music scene.

WithLoveland generously donating its space for two days and three nights worth of shows from Aug 5 through Aug 7, PDX Pop Now! is a local music event meant for EVERYONE. No matter what age you are, or what type of music you listen to, our goal is to provide you one place to catch some of Portland's finest, in a safe and fun atmosphere. Who knows? Maybe next year, you'll start your own music festival!

As the national music press glows over Portland's diverse and experimental music community, we've decided to celebrate here at home. Who are we? A group of local musicians, writers, and fans from thePDX-POP mailing list who've coalesced around the idea of organizing a free local music festival. Our mission? Celebrate the achievements of bands who've achieved "success" - while promoting the no-less talented but often lesser-known bands around town.

Had a fun show Thursday night at NOIR with Scott Allen on cello and my good friend Alison Wesley joining us on flute! She's agreed to join us again soon, yay : ) Cause it was absolutely lovely. Michelle Allen opened the show with attitude and some great guitarwork. And Kat Jones and her band were fantastic, very tight, very professional, very talented. Her voice is incredible. She ended the night a cappella with a hymn that she wrote.

We've been added to the playlist at NW Radio, the online streaming radio station and band directory! Listen to the NW's widely varied collection of talent and check 'em out at www.nw-radio.com. Their mission, "is to get the sounds of unsigned and independent bands out to the masses, and help bands promote themselves in a free and open medium...a library of thousands of tracks from unsigned or independent music artists in the Pacific Northwest US, and some parts of lower Western Canada. KPSU's John B. Jones has been archiving some of his fantastic "Hello Cruel World" radio shows. Every time that I listen, without exception, I fall in love with a couple singer-songwriters that I'd never heard before. Why don't we all know who these incredible talents are? If John B. has anything to say about it we will. Here's an mp3 of a recent show which featured "I Surrender" from our album! Show 171, and had Laurel Brauns live in the studio!

Radio Play!! Yay!
Current mood: excited

The album has been getting some radio play in a couple places across this great land, I'm excited to report.

On your left we've got: Hawaii! How cool is that? I was just IN Hawaii for the first time in February - so beautiful! Michael McCartney's "The Time Machine" show has given her a bunch of spins on KEAO/ KONI/ KPMW on Maui, and reaching Oahu.

On your right we've got: North Carolina! DJ Joey played 4 tracks from the album on Greensboro radio station WUAG 103.1.

And right here in P-town, the excellent and super-sweet John B. Jones' singer/songwriter show, "Hello Cruel World," has featured songs from the album, even when all we had were the mixes fresh from the studio! I speak from experience about his excellence and hospitality - The Crystin Byrd Band played live on the show awhile back, and as a duo with Todd Bayles earlier this year. That was also my first radio interview . His radio show plays Sundays 5 to 6pm on KPSU 98.3FM and 1450AM. Here's a link to a to a recording of a recent show, Show 175, on which "Elsewhere," a song I wrote about my favorite band, was played, and Jenni Alpert was live in the studio!

Special thanks to those DJs!
Yay! Music.
